Split Face Block: Architectural Concrete Masonry Units

Split face block is a load-bearing architectural CMU conforming to ASTM C90, available in 60+ integral colors and nominal widths from 4″ to 12″. Manufactured in Michigan for commercial, institutional, and architectural projects.

Split face block wall with natural stone texture

Split face block is an architectural concrete masonry unit (CMU) with a rough, stone-like texture on one or more faces. The texture is created during manufacturing by molding two units together face-to-face, then mechanically splitting them apart after curing — exposing the interior aggregates and producing an irregular, natural stone appearance. Also known as splitface CMU, these units serve as both the structural wall and the finished facade in commercial buildings. Frequently Asked Questions

What is split face block?
An architectural concrete masonry unit (CMU) with a rough, stone-like texture on one or more faces. The texture is created during manufacturing by molding two units together face-to-face, then mechanically splitting them apart after curing — exposing the interior aggregates and producing an irregular, natural stone appearance.
Is split face block load-bearing?
Yes, our products meet ASTM C90 requirements for load-bearing construction. These architectural CMU can be used for walls and non-load-bearing applications.
What sizes does split face block come in?
Available in nominal widths of 4″, 6″, 8″, 10″, and 12″, with standard nominal face dimensions of 8″ high by 16″ long. Actual dimensions are 3⁄8″ less than nominal to allow for mortar joints. Common shapes include full units, half blocks, corner return blocks, and bond beam units.
How many colors are available?
Grand Blanc Cement Products offers over 60 standard integral colors, ranging from earth tones and grays to warm reds, golds, and custom blends. Custom colors can be produced to match project specifications. Physical samples are recommended because monitor colors vary.
Does split face block need to be sealed?
Sealing is not required because Grand Blanc units are manufactured with an integral water repellent admixture in the mix and are typically installed with water-repellent mortar. A penetrating breathable sealer can be applied for additional protection in high-exposure environments. Painting is generally not recommended because it covers the integral color and natural texture.
